The Texas Water Development Board approves more than $54 million in flood mitigation grants

AUSTIN – (October 20, 2016) – Today, the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) authorized more than $54 million in flood mitigation assistance. The grants provided through this assistance are funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will be used to mitigate flood damages and prevent future losses.

The TWDB administers FEMA's Flood Mitigation Assistance grant program for Texas. FEMA annually accepts applications for these grants. In Fiscal Year 2016, Texas was awarded the largest grant funding of any state.

The nine projects receiving flood mitigation grants are:

  • Brazoria Drainage District No. 4-$5,093,018.52 for a drainage project
  • City of Bevil Oaks-$821,337.63 for acquisition and demolition projects
  • City of Cedar Park-$410,802.90 for acquisition and demolition projects
  • City of Houston-$12,364,111.50 for structure elevation projects
  • City of Nassau Bay-$4,965,129.60 for structure elevation projects
  • City of New Braunfels-$1,038,834.68 for acquisition and demolition projects
  • City of Port Aransas-$173,678.00 for a structure elevation project
  • Harris County Flood Control District-$15,660,745.97 for acquisition and demolition projects
  • Montgomery County-$8,801,842.80 for acquisition and demolition projects

In addition to the FEMA grants, communities are contributing approximately $4.9 million of local match funds. The Flood Mitigation Assistance grant program assists communities by providing federal funds for cost-effective measures to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage to buildings, manufactured homes, and other structures insurable under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional planning, and preparing the state water plan for the development of the state's water resources. The TWDB administers cost-effective financial assistance programs for the construction of water supply, wastewater treatment, flood control, and agricultural water conservation projects.
