Texas Water Development Board approves $19 million to the City of McAllen (Hidalgo County) for water and wastewater system improvements

AUSTIN – (July 26, 2018) – The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) today approved by resolution financial assistance in the amount of $19 million, consisting of a $12 million loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) and a $7 million loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), to the City of McAllen (Hidalgo County). The financial assistance will allow the City to finance water and wastewater system improvements.

The City could save approximately $5.3 million by using the DWSRF and the CWSRF.

The $12 million loan provided by the DWSRF will allow the City to expand the capacity of the South Water Treatment Plant from 8 million gallons per day to 12 million gallons per day, build a new raw water line to the plant and a potable water line from the plant, and make improvements to the electrical and control systems at the North and South Water Treatment Plants.

With the $7 million loan from the CWSRF, the City will construct the first phase of the Sprague Road sewer interceptor and improvements to the electrical and control systems at the North Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional planning, and preparing the state water plan for the development of the state's water resources. The TWDB administers cost-effective financial assistance programs for the construction of water supply, wastewater treatment, flood control, and agricultural water conservation projects.
