The Texas Water Development Board approves $1.8 million in flood protection grants

AUSTIN – (November 12, 2018) – The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) today authorized $1.8 million in flood protection grants from the Floodplain Management Fund for eight applicants around the state. The grants will be used to finance flood early warning systems, flood response plans, and flood protection planning.
In May 2018, the TWDB published a request for applications for $1.8 million in flood protection grants and received 38 applications for a total requested amount of just over $5.5 million.
A high priority was placed on projects in declared disaster areas, including all areas from the seven federally declared disasters as well as state declared disasters occurring between May 2015 and September 2017.
Eight applicants were approved to receive flood protection grants:
- Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District - $230,000 for an early warning system and flood response plan
- Bastrop County - $416,451 for an early warning system and flood protection planning
- Cameron County - $450,000 for flood protection planning
- City of Jersey Village - $15,475 for an early warning system
- Hays County - $142,685 for an early warning system
- Jefferson County Drainage District No. 6 - $145,389 for an early warning system
- San Jacinto River Authority - $150,000 for an early warning system
- Wharton County - $250,000 for an early warning system
When local matching funds and in-kind services from applicants are considered, the state’s $1.8 million share will result in more than $3.9 million in flood protection projects for Texas.
