Texas Water Development Board approves $18,060,000 to the City of Athens (Henderson County) for wastewater system improvements

AUSTIN – (September 18, 2025) – The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) today approved by resolution financial assistance in the amount of $18,060,000 to the City of Athens (Henderson County) from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF). The City will use the assistance for the planning, design, and construction of a wastewater system improvement project.

With the assistance approved today, the City will make improvements to its two wastewater treatment plants including adding a new sludge pump station, replacing existing return activated sludge pumps and associated control panels and alarms, purchasing mechanical sludge dewatering equipment, adding a new peak flow storage basin, replacing an electrical and administration building, and adding new flow meters and 1,800 feet of pipeline.

The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional water and flood planning, and preparing the state water and flood plans. The TWDB administers cost-effective financial assistance programs for the construction of water supply, wastewater treatment, flood mitigation, and agricultural water conservation projects.
